These days every other person especially leading urban life
is affected by the problem of root cavities at some stage of life and to
varying degrees. The problem is becoming
more and more acute. I have suffered from tooth problem for 10 years and made innumerable visit to dentists.
I suffered a lot in terms of money, time spent on visiting
dentists and undergoing painful dental procedures. The worst part is that tooth
loss on account of dental cavities is irreversible.
I really wondered why I suffered so much while I had been
brushing my teeth daily in the morning and sometime in the evening also and when
my dietary habits include minimal intake of junk food.
I would often ask dentists about the cause of this problem and they
would always give the stereotype answer – ‘food particles left on the tooth are
the cause of this problem as bacteria feed on them’.
I used to wonder why animals don’t suffer
from tooth cavities although they don’t brush their teeth and when animal and human
teeth are made of same material.
Structure of Tooth
Enamel: The hardest, white outer part of the tooth. Enamel is mostly made of calcium phosphate, a rock-hard mineral.
Dentin: A layer
underlying the enamel. By weight, 70% of dentin consists of the mineral hydroxylapatite, 20% is organic
material, and 10% is water. Dentin, which is less mineralized and less brittle
than enamel, is necessary for the support of enamel.
Pulp: The softer, living inner structure of teeth. Blood vessels and nerves run through the pulp of the teeth.
Cementum: A layer of connective tissue that binds the roots of the teeth
firmly to the gums and jawbone.
Process of
formation of Dental Cavity
Dental cavity, is an infection, bacterial
in origin, that causes demineralization and destruction of the hard tissues (enamel
and dentin). Tooth decay disease is caused by specific types of bacteria
in mouth that produce lactic acid
in the presence of fermentable
carbohydrates such as sucrose, fructose,
and glucose. If left in contact with the tooth, these acids may cause
demineralization of tooth, which is the dissolution of its mineral content. The
process is dynamic, however, as remineralization can also occur if the acid is neutralized by saliva or mouthwash or Fluoride toothpaste. If demineralization
continues over time, enough mineral content may be lost so as to form a cavity
or hole.
When the cavity is confined to enamel or dentin, the damage
can be repaired by simple tooth filling. However, when the bacterial infection reaches
pulp of the tooth, the patient suffers extreme pain. In that scenario, root canal treatment, followed
by capping of tooth is the only
solution. However, life of filling is
not infinite and one has to go for refilling after certain time interval.
Similarly life of tooth after root canal treatment is also about 10-15 years
after which tooth fails.
Cure

Root cause of modern day dental problems is increased
intake of white sugar and food products containing white sugar. Therefore their
intake should be reduced to minimum. Alternatively after every intake of white
sugar or product containing white sugar, one should properly rinse mouth with fresh
water or brush the teeth so that no sugar particle is left sticking with the
teeth.
These
days, intake of white sugar has increased manifold and that’s why problem of tooth cavities is more as compared
with earlier days. Animals don’t eat white sugar and that is the reason their
teeth are saved inspite of the fact that animals don’t brush their teeth.
·
I have devised a mouth wash which is
highly effective to cure tooth infection. Here I will describe the method of
its preparation. Boil 10-15 fresh leaves of neem (Azadirachta
indica) with about a glass of water (250 ml) in an open pan for about 15-20
minutes. Let the water cool down and then remove the neem leaves. This water
can be stored in refrigerator for about next 7 days. Use this water as
mouthwash before one goes to bed in night. For using as mouthwash, mildly heat
up the water. Add a pinch of salt and turmeric powder. Now rinse your mouth
with this water for about 2-3 minutes and then proceed to bed without taking
anything else or rinsing your mouth with fresh water.
This
rinsing can be performed once or twice a week as preventive remedy for tooth
cavities. If there is pain in tooth, use
this mouthwash daily, till the pain subsides.
This is a
highly effective home made remedy for fighting tooth cavities. Neem is a highly
effective antiseptic herbal remedy and its ability to fight infections is
recognised word over.
In India’s
villages people still use neem twig to clean their teeth. This is a thousands
of years old traditional method and in India modern day dentist has not been
able to enter villages as villagers don’t suffer from tooth cavities.
You can
also use this home made remedy to get rid of painful tooth cavities.
·
Use herbal tooth paste instead of
modern day Fluoride tooth pastes as these are much more effective.
·
Brush your teeth at least once
daily.
All this will go a long way to prevent your teeth from
painful dental cavities.
